About Letea Forest Natural Reserve

Letea Forest Natural Reserve, established in 1938, is the oldest natural reserve in Romania and one of the most significant protected areas within the UNESCO-listed Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve. Located in Tulcea County, within the Danube Delta, it spans a sandy plain characterized by dunes, labyrinthine channels, and dense vegetation. This forest is remarkable for its unusual ecosystem: it is the only natural forest on sand in Europe and contains uniquely adapted plant species, including ancient sessile oaks, elm, ash, and a variety of rare orchids. Subtropical vegetation mingles with European forest species due to the microclimate and the proximity to the Black Sea and Danube waters. The forest serves as habitat to diverse animal species like wild horses, deer, and some rare birds, including herons and egrets. Visitors are drawn to Letea Forest for its scenic hiking paths winding through dense groves of grapevines and mulberries, ancient tree formations, and the chance to observe traditional Danube Delta wildlife up close. The reserve’s distinctive sand dunes create a surreal backdrop that contrasts with the lush green flora. Additionally, the area offers opportunities for guided horseback tours and ecological exploration. Accessibility largely depends on boat transfers from nearby towns in the Danube Delta, preserving its relatively untouched state and enhancing the visitor’s nature immersion. Letea Forest Natural Reserve is a vital conservation area, emphasizing the protection of ecological balance and local biodiversity while offering outdoor enthusiasts a rare glimpse into a complex, ancient ecosystem.
